>> i'm jim hadley. two officers were pursuing a stolen vehicle where i-95 and the beltway intersect in the beltsville area. one officer was ejected from the cruiser and has been declared dead. >> we're live at the hospital there. we have details. chris, what can you tell us? >> reporter: behind me, you see members of the prince george's county police department, maryland state police and also officers from other agencies reaching out both to the prince george's county police, the family of the victim who died. he was ejected from the car, as you said and had traumatic head injuries. brought here to the prince george's county hospital, the emergency room. the other officer riding with him in the cruiser suffering multiple injuries, nonlife-threatening. let's take a look at some of the pictures shot earlier today from chopper 4. on 95 south, the officers were investigating the attempted theft of an auto.

they got an indication that the suspect might or suspects might be in a silver acura with temporary tags. they gave chase. they were in radio contact with the dispatcher and then the police car, the cruiser left the roadway, 95 just south of powder mill road in beltsville. just before you get to the beltway. landed in the ditch. now the driver of the police cruiser who died was 23-year-old. he has not been identified. his mother is here at the hospital. the rest of the family is heading here. he had two and a half years on the prince george's county police force. before that, he had been a police explorer. which is like a boy scout only more advanced a he had been an explorer with the police department. so they knew him. he loved this department is what we were told. and he was well-known and well-loved. since he was 15 or 16 years of age. once again, they were in

pursuit. we heard just moments ago from the prince george's county police chief, mark mcgaw. >> they were investigating a theft or attempt theft from auto. they saw a vehicle that they believed was a suspect vehicle, attempted to get behind it. and at some point lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway. it's tragic. but it just shows the courage and dedication of these officers. >> reporter: the police chief said they did their duty and they did it well. and the police department is asking for anyone with information, any witness to this accident between the silver acura with temporary tags which some on the scene say actually forced the police cruiser off the road. that's being investigated according to the police chief, county executive baker was here saying our prayers go out to the family of the officer who died as well as the officer who is

injured. that's the latest from prince george's county hospital. chris gordon, news 4. back to you. we want to let everyone know that 95 southbound at this hour is still shut down to traffic as we head into the rush hour. we'll keep you up to date on this tragic day in prince george's county. a close call for passengers on a ride-on bus today. folks inside this house in montgomery county. this bus crashed into the home in silver spring. police tell us the bus was turning on to avenel road before 11:00. it lost control and slammed into the home in the 9400 block. two people were at home at the time but no one was injured. several passengers were also on the bus but they were not seriously hurt. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. more than 100,000 students are home or on their way home from the first day of school in prince george's county. a few changes that parents need to know >> it's the first day of school

in prince george's county. it's also the grand opening for green belt middle school and this eighth grader approves of the new $53.6 million building. >> i'm very excited. i can learn more in this schoolment. >> parents are excited about the programs. this new state of the art building will offer. >> this is a new tag program that my child is entering. it's new. they're expanding and we've got a lot of good thoughts about the entire program. >> delays in construction for laurel elementary mean that students will be spending the first week or so of school at the old green belt middle school. that's not the only uncomfortable change parents are focused on. >> i'm going to miss these beautiful students that i've had the privilege of working with for the past six years. >> dr. william hyatt is leaving the school to lead the philadelphia school system. his proudest accomplishment while here was leveling the playing field for students. >> ten years ago, certain

students didn't have access to certain programs which means they didn't have access to certain opportunities. we've wiped away many of the roadblocks, the barriers if you will for those students. >> he has some advice for his successors. >> we tend to really begin talking about a lot of issues, generally around adults. but i think that someone has to keep the attention focused on what's best for students. >> dr. alvin crowley, a high ranking administrator been the d.c. school system has been named interim superintendent. the permanent position is still very much open. >> dr. alvin crowley can very much apply for the permanent position. but we want to make sure that we have the right amount of community engagement make sure it's a transparent process and our community is helping us. >> parents say they're looking forward to taking part in that process. >> i think we all have to be very involved and make sure that our thoughts are heard so that

we all understand. these are our priorities, let's work together to find them. >> the parents will have an opportunity to voice their concerns and make sure that the school board knows what it is that they're looking for in the next superintendent. there are going to be a series of forms coming up. the next one is happening tomorrow night at 6:30 p.m. at bowie high school. then august 30th at northwestern high school. both forums will begin at 6:30 p.m. in green belt, tracee wilkins, news 4. and back to school also means drivers in prince george's county should be on the lookout for school zone speed cameras. they were set up in school zones last year. police say almost 350,000 automated speed camera tickets were issued bringing in more than $5 million last year. all school zone speed camera tickets are $40 each. >> next monday, august 27th kids in montgomery county, loudon county and d.c. will start back to school. on september 4th, school starts

way towards northwestern falk year county. a few areas of thunder in martinsburg. these showers will continue to move in towards the area as we make our way through the rest of the evening. how about frederick county. through the morning towards urbana. temperatures this evening, how about 75 degrees at 7:00 and yes, the chance for some shower activity. 58 when you wake up tomorrow morning. some of the cooler suburbs and we could see fog. we'll talk more about that and the next chance much showers in a minute. a dramatic shift in the focus for the race for the white house. an anti-abortion candidate made incendiary comments about rape and pushed women's rights front and center. steve handelsman has our report. >> the issue of abortion rights for the victims of rape exploding today. poses possible damage to the

ryan/romney presidential campaign. with women voters, they disproportionately back obama. he weighed in. >> the remarks were effective. rape is rape. >> it was republican congressman todd akin running for a senate seat in missouri who set off the firestorm. questioning if all rapes are, in nis words, legitimate. he was arguing against abortion rights for sexual assault victims. >> from what i understand from doctors. if it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to shut that whole thing down. >> senate democrat claire mccaskill had been trailing him in polls. >> this is jaw dropping and stunning. >> akin claimed he misspoke and has sympathy for women who were raped and apologized on the radio. >> it's an evil act. >> mitt romney called the original statement inexcusable. he and ryan favor abortion rights for rape victims.

will report live from tampa. the democratic national convention also next month. on the democratic side, speaking of, o'malley will be a speaker there at the convention. he spoke at the dnc in 2004 when he was mayor of baltimore. now he's serving his second term as governor. he's also the chair of the democratic governor's association. the 2012 dnc begins september 3rd in charlotte, north carolina. some junior chefs from our area enjoyed lunch at the white house with first lady michelle obama and other kids from across the country. all the guests won a national healthy recipe contest sponsored by ep curious and the federal government. there was a special surprise guest. president obama stopped by to congratulate the winners. the prize worthy dishes included fish chowder with fruity salad. sizzling tofu with green onions and sugar snap peas and a golden

some sad news out of hollywood this afternoon. one of the original women of comedy, phyllis diller, has died. dillera a housewife turned entertainer got her start at the age of 40. she became a staple of nightclubs and tv at a time when female standup was a rarity.

she suffered a major heart attack in 1999 and retired a couple of years later. her long time manager said she died peacefully in her sleep with a smile on her face. phyllis diller was 95 years old. pop starry a is facing criticism after she says she still loves chris boun three years after he beat her up. >> some women's groups are firing back saying it sets a bad example of for victims of domestic violence. others call it brave to admit it. >> in an interview with oprah, she denied the fact that they are dating again. >> we're working on our friendship again. we're very, very close friends. we built a trust again. we love each other and we probably always will. i think he was the love of my life. he was the first love, and i see that he loved me the same way. >> pleaded guilty to assaulting

rihanna in 2009. he was placed on five years probation. hollywood is reaching today the -- to the apparent suicide or reacting to the apparent suicide of british director, tony scott. he died yesterday after jumping from a suspension bridge in los angeles. scott is the man behind hits such as top gun, days of thunder and true romance. investigators found several notes to loved ones in his car and another location. scott is the younger brother of ridley scott, the director of alien and gladiator. tony scott, 68 years old. some may remember donna der coe from her days on baywatch. she's on a new mission in life. she's searching for noah's ark. she suffered serious injuries and had to cut a trip to turkey short. she's determined to resume her search. she's reportedly looking near where the bible says the ark came to rest.

mariah carey may have company at the judge's table on "american idol." there's several reports that rapper singer nicki minaj will join the show. near idol nor fox are confirming that. the super bass singer is definitely doing it. idol announced mariah carey last month after the exit of steven tyler and jennifer lopez. no official word if randy jackson will remain with the show. >> can't wait to see all those looks. it's going to be an eye full. nick i min ai minaj. >> two women. swimming from cuba to florida, some think it's impossible. for diana nyad, it's a goal she want to achieve. >> as mark potter reports, she's plowing through despite an overnight storm and some stinging jellyfish. >> diana nyad has been swimming

in the ocean for more than a day and a half. she ran into a storm last night. it was a squall that stayed on top of her and required a course correction. before that, the biggest problem involved jellyfish which come up to the surface during the night. she was stung a number of times and had to be treated for that but kept on going. >> you need every piece of skin of your body covered to have whole protection against these things. there's no way really to cover your lips much the stings that she encountered were on her lips. >> the conditions are much better. the sea is relatively flat, the sun is out and she's swimming quite strong now. >> she was singing beatles songs to the crew to lighten everybody up. it's an amazing thing to see. >> originally, she was scheduled to arrive in key west early tomorrow morning. but her crew says it's hard to predict exactly when and where she will land given the variables, including, of course, the weather. mark potter, nbc news, miami.

we had a cool start today. but i was at nationals park around noon and it was blazing holt out will. >> any time the sun is shining this time of year, the sun still intense sun angle. even though we're in the upper 70s, you get into the sun, it's going to feel -- if you don't have the wind coming through you, i'm talking about -- if you're outside, a lot of fresh air going on. a pretty nice afternoon right now. we're looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies. not bad at all when you consider that temperatures right now are running about five degrees below

average for this time of year. hey, why not? we need that after the summer that we have seen. high temperatures today, sitting where they are right now at 81 degrees. the current temperature. winds out of south at 10 miles per hour. dew point coming up at 62 degrees. so really not bad at all. take a look at these numbers. 70, 75 ingators burglary. baltimore. 60s along i-81. that's where the rain is. that's where the rain has been over the past couple of hours. making it way to the east now, you can see it entering fauquier county, rappahannock county, towards frederick, washington. we'll zoom in and show you where we're seeing this rain right here. just to the east of winchester. it's coming through winchester. 64 degrees. a very cool afternoon. these are along route 50 here and right along 66. notice some heavier rain coming through the area. not a whole lot of lightning. not a lot of thunder. you may see 30, 40 miles an hour wind out of this.

but you'll see an occasional lightning bolt. this is not severe weather. but it's much-needed rainfall. if you live in marshall, warren ton, heads up for you. you'll see the rain move through in 10 to 20 minutes. blue mont, western portions of lou down county, that rain is moving your way. head up to the west of the mountains here. you're starting to see some thunder and lightning once again. nothing severe but a stronger storm making its way down i-70. heads up around frederick. that will be in your yar in the next 20 to 30 minutes. we have rain trying to move in. we'll see how far it makes to the east. hopefully we'll get some of the rain. it will be around the 6:00 hour. as many of you are heading home or out for dinner. >> the area of low pressure to the south, that area of low pressure stays south. we seeunshine and temperatures. on wednesday, that area of low pressure moves up. i think we see a lot more clouds on wednesday. better chance of some showers.

again, nothing severe. just some shower activity going on out there. this evening, partly cloudy, scattered showers and a few storms. temperatures 71 to 76 degrees. tomorrow morning, you're going to wake up in some areas. it's going to be cool down into the upper 50s. there could be fog, areas of fog especially where you see the rain this evening. mostly to the west of i-95. as we move through the day tomorrow, temperatures 80 to 85. a little bit warmer but still below average for this time of year. current average is 86 degrees right now. you have 84 on wednesday, 87 on thursday. 89 on friday. as we look towards the weekend, some nice weather coming up here. a couple of days of clouds and rain, but all in all, not bad at all considering the hot summer we've had. 80s the next seven days. >> we like how this is winding up. last week off of vacay. >> my kid starts monday. >> new clothes, too. some of them are glad to have cooler weather. thank you.

heath. he stepped down to run philadelphia. diana nyad is said to be swimming strong as she continues her effort to become the first person to swim from cuba to florida without a shark cage. her team said that a storm blew her off course temporarily and she was stung by jellyfish. conditions are better today. >> on wall street today, stocks ended flat. the dow shaved off about four points. neither the nasdaq nor s&p 500 had any virtual change. >> for the first time ever, the augusta national golf club will open this fall with female members. the home of at masters invited former secretary of state condoleeza rice and south carolina darla moore to join. nbc's jay gray has a look at the first women who will be donning the club's green jackets. >> for eight decades, augusta national has only opened gates to male members until today. >> they liked what they had and didn't want anybody to change it. they wanted to keep it the way

it was. they were wrong. >> but today the club revealed former secretary of state condoleeza rice and financier darla moore have accepted invitations to be the first two women with permanent lockers at augusta national. >> they're admirable people, done wonderful things and they will be an asset to that club. >> in typical augusta fashion, there was no fanfare. the announcement coming in a written statement from club chairman billy payne which said in part, these accomplished women share our passion for the game of golf and both are well-known and respected by our membership. it will be a proud moment when we present condoleeza and darla their green jackets when the club opens this fall. observers say the jackets should fit both women just fine. >> they fit the profile of an augusta member. civic minded, passion for the game of golf, successful in business. >> rice acknowledged the invitation in a written statement saying i have visited augusta national on several

occasions and look forward to playing golf, renewing friendships and forming new one through this very special opportunity. the renowned club and golf course now perhaps finally mastering what some have said was its only major flaw. jay gray, nbc news. >> critics say he's in over his hoodie. they're angry about mark zuckerberg's leadership of facebook. the stock plunged to an all-time low last friday. today the company's stock had a minor gain bringing the shares back above $20. corporate experts are suggesting the 28-year-old founder step down as ceo to turn over the reins to a more experienced executive. facebook has lost half its value since going public back in may. high gas prices putting us on pace for a new record. gas prices typically begin to drop this late in the summer. but that hasn't been the case this year. prices averaged out to the highest level ever last year.

new numbers overnight from aaa show d.c. paying about $3.91 per gallon of regular. that's down about a penny from yesterday. in maryland, you're paying about $3.69 which hasn't moved much in recent days. in virginia it's 3.78 and west virginia, $3.74. general motors is recalling suvs that could catch fire. it includes in virginia, maryland and d.c. they're 2006 and 2007 models of the chevy trailblazer. buick rainier, gmc enjoy, sab 97x and isuzu ascender. the lock controls could start a fire. road salt can cause the corrosion. the recall only affects vehicles sold or owned in states with cold, snowy winters. >> when we come right back on news 4, how you can give a second chance to a puppy that had a tough start in life.

women drink more after getting married. researchers at the university of cincinnati examined marriage and alcohol abuse. they found that women who were in long-term marriages consume more alcohol while their husbands actually drink less. that's partly because wives have a lower level of drinking than their husbands in the first place. the study also found that married men drink significantly less than divorced or single guys. but men are more likely to turn to drinking after a divorce. walmart is expanding its popular lay away program for holiday shoppers. the program starts on september 16th and will last through december 14th. it will include more items, not just toys and electronics. they charge $15 to open an account. you'll get that $15 back on a gift card after making your

a killer whale is justing to

her new home today at sea world at san diego. the 19-year-old whale came from six flags in vallejo, california. she made the trip on a large cargo plane and then on the back of a flatbed truck in a container filled with water. sea world plans to have her performing soon but didn't give an exact date for her debut. >> looks like an inverted truck or something. that's pretty cool. >> that's got to be a big truck. >> that's awesome. >> all that splashing around in that. >> beep, beep, beep. splash. >> we got wet this morning. >> we did. some areas got showers and much-needed rain the past couple of days. not the best weekend for some of us. down towards the beaches where i was excited about that because i got to go down to the beaches and we saw pretty nice weather there. we did see shower activity and like most of us, most of us ended up with a pretty good weekend even though we saw clouds and much cooler temperatures. no more 90s.

technology has radically changed the way most of us watch movies and television. streaming video has exploded in popularity. >> and consumers have more choices than ever for content providers. chris clackum reports. >> obviously we're in love with watching a movie through streaming video. a recent survey found 52% of us are watching this way. >> that was more than people who visited a movie theater or watched a blu-ray disk or dvd. >> the competition that got the video streamed to you has grown too. led by industry giant netflix. who is said to be pumping out a billion hours of online video every month. >> it's a great deal -- people gave it good marks for value. you pay $8 a month, it's an all you can eat subscription. >> there's also amazon instant video, apple itunes and voodoo which rated higher than netflix

two dozen dogs rescued from a puppy mill. the animals are getting care after some were found cramped in cages. darcy spencer has the progress to give them a new loving home. >> some of them are so scared they're shaking. one dog constantly walks in circles. these are among the nearly two dozen dogs rescued from a puppy mill in shelby, ohio, that are calling the washington animal rescue league home for now. >> they are in a little bit of rough shape with regard to help. but nothing that i think that will prevent them from getting better with some care. >> 220 chihuahuas and 50 sharpays were removed. the washington animal rescue league will care for 23 of them. here they'll get the medical care they need for skin conditions and eye disease. >> they were kept in very small quarters, sometimes multiple dogs in one cage. >> the shelter's behavior and training staff will also work with the dogs to get them ready
